Who Goes to Counselling?

Posted on October 17, 2010

Whenever I meet new people and they discover that I’m a psychological therapist, the most common question I’m asked is, “What kind of people go to counselling?”. My now predictable answer is always, “people just like you and me”.

Even though the stigma of seeing a therapist is now long in the past, many individuals are still not convinced that they could benefit from counselling. They think therapy is for people with “real” problems and that their own issues are far below the radar. Not so, not so at all.

In this increasingly stressful and fragmented world we now live in, the average person often comes to a point in their lives, wherein they find themselves at a loss to know how to make the changes they desire, nor do they know where to turn. They can see frustrating patterns in their lives or find themselves with a perception of self that keeps them stuck. This is where investing some well used time with a counsellor can really pay off, creating together an environment that can bring about effective and lasting change.

Some of the bravest people I know are my clients. These are individuals who have had the courage to challenge themselves and their thinking and allow me into their struggles. This takes great strength and commitment and a willingness to push through the discomfort of vulnerability. I am often left in awe.

So, here’s to people just like you and me. People with common struggles, frustrations and fears. People with the courage and determination to make their lives their own. People who really want to live life in freedom. Kudos to one and all :)
